Working of the Parking Sensor System

2021.08.03

Introduction

Car are now very common, you don’t see a road with no car, and with driving a car comes certain problems, like parking. Car parking can be quite difficult for many drivers, especially beginners and it can be tough even for experienced drivers at times. However, as we see advancements in all aspects of living, there have been advancements in the automobile industry too. More specifically in the aspects of car parking, add-on accessories like, parking sensor system has become very popular.

What is a car parking sensor system? How does a parking sensor system work? Are there any significant benefits of the car parking system? In this article, we will see in detail all the whats and hows of the parking sensor system.

What is a car parking sensor system?

Parking sensors are proximity sensors, and as the name suggests they sense the proximity of objects. Parking sensors detect how close you are to an obstacle when parking. These parking systems activate when you shift into the reverse gear. It alerts the driver audibly by the beeping tones, the closer the obstacle, and the urgent the beeping tones (louder and/or faster beeping). But the real question is how do they detect the obstacles, and what technology do they use to do that.

Types of Parking sensor systems

There are 2 main, common types of parking sensor systems;

  1. The Ultrasonic parking sensor system
  2. The Electromagnetic parking sensor system

How do these parking sensor systems work?

The above mentioned are the two most common parking sensor systems on the automobile market at the moment. Both parking sensor systems do the same thing but in different ways, so what is their working? Read below and find out.

The working of ultrasonic parking system

This parking system uses the emission of ultrasonic sound waves in pulses. These waves are of a very high frequency, higher than the human audible frequency. These pulsating sound waves bounce back from the surface of any obstacle in their way. The bounced back sound waves come back to the car and the control unit measures the distance between the car and the obstacle with the help of the collected data. The parking system alerts you with beeping sounds. The frequency of the beeping tones will depend on how close the obstacle is to your car. The higher the frequency, the closer the object.

The parking system activates the rear sensors when you shift to the reverse gear and the front sensors can be activated manually, they close automatically when speed becomes normal. This parking system requires more than just one sensor. Multiple sensors are installed along the horizontal length of the front and back bumpers. Special drills are used to make holes on the bumper to precisely fit these ultrasonic parking sensors.

The working of the electromagnetic parking sensor system

Unlike the ultrasonic sensors that emit sound waves, the electromagnetic sensors emit radio waves at a certain frequency. When these waves hit the obstacle, they are bounced back at a different frequency. This change of frequency is used by the sensors control unit to calculate the distance between the obstacle and the car. The electromagnetic parking sensor can detect more types of materials than the ultrasonic parking sensor.

Unlike the ultrasonic sensor, the electromagnetic sensor is not fitted into the holes in the bumper of the car, they sit right behind the bumper of your car, so you do not need to drill any holes in your bumper to install them. This parking sensor system will also alert you audibly. When it detects the object the beeping goes off and continues even when the car stops, the beeping increases further when the car starts moving closer towards the obstacle to alert the driver.

Advantages

Installing a parking sensor system is beneficial for the driver in countless ways.

  1. The parking sensor system will assist the driver in parking their cars with much more ease, parking won’t be as exhausting now.
  2. No need for anyone’s help in parking car required
  3. This parking sensor system work even in bad weather, moisture, dust, and even in the dark, unlike parking cameras.
  4. Almost any type of material can be detected by these sensors
  5. You don’t need to worry about the blind spots because the sensors will detect and help you.
  6. You will easily get an alert audibly, beeping tones will go off so you will not be required to break your concentration from your driving to look at the dashboard, and you only need to listen!
  7. There is very little chance of bumping your car into something while parking
  8. Less money is spent on the maintenance because there will be no dents or scratches

Limitations

Some limitations of the parking sensor systems include;

  1. Very thin or flat objects are hard to detect with the parking sensor system
  2. If the mud or snow sticks to the sensor they will not work properly, so you will need to clean them.

Car parking sensor systems are advanced technology, using sensors and radiations to help you with car parking. These are very effective and convenient, and they have many more benefits than drawbacks. Now parking your car is not going to be a hustle, parking sensor system is the one solution for so many problems. These are affordable, easy to install and use.
